History

9GAG was launched on 11.04.08 by 5 Hong Kong students: Ray Chan, Chris Chan, Derek Chan, Marco Fung, and Brian Yu. The meaning of the name «9GAG» remains unexplained. Now it has a headquarter in Hong Kong with some offices in Mountain View, California, US.

Development and social influence

An online platform and social media website. It was created «just for fun» to let users share any funny online content easier and faster than via email. Its popularity has been growing and now the platform is included in the Top 200 most successful websites in the world and considered as popular as social media giants like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. 9GAG released its own mobile app for Android and iOS in 2012 and its first game called 9GAG Redhead redemption in 2015. The website’s cost is estimated at $56 million, and user visits are counted in 230 million per month.
